TERRY CALLIER

A voice of so many colours and textures, a unique sound dedicated to telling the truth.
His truth. Everyday people’s truth.
The words he chose, the stories he painted with his singular music and poetry resound in every choice we make.
His music is around us, a guide line to never forget to give what we are.
This is a tribute to a free soul.

“Somewhere between time and space,
We shall be free.”

Ji Dru and Sandra Nkake

Grant Phabao presents Pompidoo - Come Ya Fi Talk
(Free MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) 2012-10-19

Pompidoo (not to be confused with similarly named deejay Prince Pompidou who recorded in the early 70's) is the original rock stone voiced Jamaican reggae and dancehall deejay who worked King Jammy's sound system and was able to make his voice sound like a synthesizer. He was most popular in Jamaica in the late 1980s, with a series of singles including 'Governor General', 'The DJ With The Rockstone Voice' or 'Synthesizer Voice'. After no new release during the last 5 years, Pompidoo is now back on the airwaves with this stunning new version of his 2004 single 'Come Ya Fi Talk', originally recorded for the French Bam Salute label, remastered and dressed with a brand new riddim by roots reggae master Grant Phabao! An original raggamuffin monster tune, strictly rub-a-dub, that's sure to rock the modern dancehalls anytime!!

Florelie Escano - Moody Blues (Grant Phabao Remix)

Florelie Escano - Moody Blues (Grant Phabao Remix)
(Free MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) 2012-09-19

The original Soul/Funk track Moody Blues was engineered by Lotek at his Counter Clockwise Studios in Melbourne, Australia, who posted a stripped-down version on Soundcloud, with just guitar and Florelie Escano on vocals, asking is some remixers were interested. We managed to connect and Grant Phabao ended up producing this suprising and breezy Reggae/Afro/Blues remix which you'll find on Florelie's upcoming limited CD out october 17th 2012.

Grant Phabao presents The Lone Ranger - Usain Bolt The Puma

Grant Phabao presents The Lone Ranger - Usain Bolt The Puma
(Free MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-03

After Usain Bolt's heart breaking false start, which left him disqualified from the 2011 World Athletics Championships, Jamaican deejay The Lone Ranger and French producer Grant Phabao decided to record Usain Bolt The Puma, an homage song to Jamaica's greatest sprinter (and, obviously, his sponsor).

The song starts on a killer chorus hook before slipping into an unstoppable flow of no less surprising verses, filled with wiki-accuracy, wicked rhymes and dynamic rub-a-dub gimmicks. The reggae groove itself is relentless, tight and bumpy, like 70s Jamaica sounding heavy.

While chillin' with Jamaican singers The Lone Ranger, Jim Brown and Carlton Livingston a few weeks ago at Paris DJs studios, Djouls and Grant Phabao asked them what they should do with the song, with the 2012 Olympic Games happening very fast and the buzz around Usain Bolt growling like thunder… The Jamaicans all replied instantly that the track should be put up and spreading, that all the "but what if he doesn't win this time?" doubts should be erased because there was "no way" he was gonna lose. Being asked "how do you know that?", the Paris DJs operators were offered the most simple answer: "because he is Usain Bolt".

Singer The Lone Ranger was the number one soundsystem deejay between 1977 and 1981 on the island of Jamaica. A 100% authentic Jamaican legend from the big years of Studio One Records, The Lone Ranger has been bringing back the golden years of rub-a-dub lately with the Soul Stereo Soundsystem in clubs, with Jamaica All Stars on stage at the Garance Reggae Festival 2012, or in the studio with Grant Phabao, one of the rare producers to have restored the sound of 1970s' Jamaica.

Based in Paris, Grant Phabao works with many reggae legends, but also international artists such as George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic), David Byrne (Talking Heads), Chuck D. (Public Enemy), Richard Dorfmeister (Tosca/Kruder & Dorfmeister), Quantic (Tru Thoughts) or Tony Allen (Fela's Afrika 70)… His tracks and remixes are played by the biggest DJs, including David Guetta (!).

Paris DJs are an international music bureau operating from Paris (as its name says), which offers customized services to projects associating music and brands. Their thematic podcasts have already been downloaded by more than 2.6 millions of cybernauts. Paris DJs are currently working on the release of their first compilation, Dis Is Good For You (on an Afro/Tropical/Reggae tip), while developping George Clinton's upcoming website with amazing French graphic designer Benito, who cooked this beautiful art cover and a few other Usain Bolt paintings for the occasion...

J-san And The Big Mean - Moving Too Fast (Grant Phabao Remix)

J-san And The Big Mean - Moving Too Fast (Grant Phabao Remix
(Free MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) 2012-05-09

Brooklyn-based soul, dub, electronic artist/producer Jay Spaker aka J-san's musical journey has been a shape shifting experience spanning 20 years of soul & roots music. Son of radical vietnam veteran father & Okinawan mother J-san was raised on the road, living with artists, musicians, ganja growers and hustlers. He was an original member of John Brown's Body in the 90s, then went on to form dub rock/jam band J-san & The Analogue Sons during the the next decade, a band described as Bob Marley meets M.I.A. produced by Manu Chao… After a few featurings, including vocalist on 10ft Ganja Plant's album Bush Rock released in 2009, J-san has launched two new bands, Double Tiger, an electronic dub / dubstep project who's just released the No Give Up single on Hydra Records Japan, and J-san and The Big Mean, a rock/reggae/afro project fusing the rhythms of Afrobeat and R&B with the sounds of Dub and Soul to make your body move. When their first afro-reggae single Moving Too Fast reached Paris DJs' shores, we contacted J-san right away, offering him to try and have Grant Phabao dress the song with pure Jamaican roots vibes. The man was already a Paris DJs follower and we hooked up instantly. This deadly rough & tough remix is the another step for Paris DJs in their ongoing collaborations with brothers from Brooklyn and we can hope that J-san and Grant Phabao will do a proper EP together at some point!

Remix 'The Iphone Connection' and make your own tribute to Steve Jobs!

Paris DJs are proud to announce a worldwide exclusive remix competition using the vocals of Studio One legend, one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs, The Lone Ranger. He was twice voted number 1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ('bim' and 'ribbit' were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time.

Paris DJs are giving you the opportunity to remix the Lone Ranger/Grant Phabao tribute to Steve Jobs track 'The Iphone Connection', the first single from the brand new Paris DJs label, available on iTunes.

The vocal acapella from the song is available to download below (the original version of the tune being available here). We want you to build your own unique track behind The Lone Ranger's amazing vocals and let his producer Grant Phabao decide who has created the best remix. Add you own beats, instrumentals, flip an old version/riddim or re-interpret the vocal below - whatever is clever, we want to hear how good you can make The Lone Ranger sound.  (We're looking for original, innovative remixes here and not a re-edit so get your thinking caps on…)

WHAT'S THE PRIZE ?

01. We'll press up an official, numbered limited edition run of your remix on 7 inch vinyl to be available in selected shops worldwide. No better way to get your name out there than to remix one of Reggae's true legends.

02. Grant Phabao will do an audio mastering of you remix. Your name will get out there and your music will sound as good as it can be.

03. You'll get a Lone Ranger signed copy of your own 7" for your collection.

04. Grant Phabao will play your remix on the Paris DJs podcast.

05. Your remix will be hosted for download on Paris DJs, along with a selection of the best remixes.

HOW DO I SUBMIT MY REMIX ?

Simple - just sendspace or mediafire or wetransfer (etc.) your MP3/WAV/AIF file to parisdjs@gmail.com.
We'll email you to let you know we received your remix and we'll announce the winners on the site in the coming weeks.

Nostalgia 77 - Simmerdown feat. Josa Peit (Grant Phabao Remix feat. Marco Benevento)

Nostalgia 77 feat. Josa Peit - Simmerdown (Grant Phabao Remix feat. Marco Benevento)
(Free MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) 2011-07-26

Released early 2011, Simmerdown, featuring stunning vocals from Josa Peit, was the first single to be lifted from the latest Nostalgia 77 album, The Sleepwalking Society, released late March 2011. We've been active supporters of Nostalgia 77's measureless talent since day one and some of you might remember the reggae remix our resident producer Grant Phabao did on N77's Seven Nation Army cover with Alice Russell… It was high time to try and rework a new Nostalgia 77 track and we had the chance to get a visit from Marco Benevento, one of our favorite keyboards players along with John Medeski and Jackie Mittoo. Well you put musicians in a studio, what happens? They play together, so Marco ended playing organ and then clavinet for a reggae remix of Simmerdown Phabao was working on… This track was hidden in our closet for a year, and when we learned that Nostalgia 77 was coming on play in Paris on February 16th at La Bellevilloise, we offered his label, Tru Thoughts, to put it up for free as a virtual release on Paris DJs. You won't hear this kind of artists combination anywhere else so we hope you'll enjoy the unique groove and spirit in there. And we hope to see you tonite (feb 16) at la Bellevilloise!

This mp3 is offered with courtesy of Tru-Thoughts Recordings (Nostalgia 77, Josa Peit), The Royal Potato Family (Marco Benevento) and T.I.M.E.C./Paris DJs (Grant Phabao)
