Pressure keeps on rising for the upcoming releases of Grant Phabao's three (!) new albums with The Lone Ranger, Carlton Livingston and The Jays (on his own label T.I.M.E.C. co-run with Djouls and Captain Detendu)... The french dubmeister offers here a bouncy reggae rework of I Like It, I Love It, taken from last year's hit album Everywhere At Once (released on Quannum/ANTI). It's kind of a cousin of the N.A.S.A. remix he did earlier this year (featuring David Byrne and Chuck D.!) - all party-style with its rolling drum breaks and hookish chorus-like lyrics all along! A certified floor filler already tested and approved by fellow DJ Erik Rug at is famous WaxGroove nights.

Michael Jackson - Rockin' Robin (Grant Phabao Remix)

Rockin' Robin is a 1958 song by Bobby Day. The single was Day's only hit single, becoming a No. 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit. The song was covered by The Hollies on their first album in 1964 and would be revived as a single again in 1972 by the teenaged Michael Jackson as his second single release on Motown. Jackson took his version to number two on the U.S. pop singles chart that year. The french dubmeister Grant Phabao pays here his due tribute to the king of pop, with a reggae remix of this pop/rhythm and blues cover of a fifties song - rockin' the dancehall and burnin' one for the man!

Grant Phabao's list of remixes is becoming months after months quite a treat, and we keep on feeding him with cool big hitters a cappelas to work his skank and dub magic on. George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, AC/DC (!), Q-Tip and Cee-Lo all got their proper rework, offered for free in remixed form, here on Paris DJs. BUT Q-Tip got the exclusive Grant Phabao treatment twice and we didn't want Erykah Badu (one of the most wonderful American voices of our time) to be jealous, so here's a second reggae take on a track from the New AmErykah Part.1 album. Connie Price and the Keystones began as a recording project for Stones Throw's Now-Again label involving Dan Ubick (Breakestra, Madlib's Sound Directions) and Todd M. Simon (Macy Gray, Antibalas, El Michels Affair). Combining elements of soul, afro beat, dub reggae, late 60's/early 70's film scores, and psychedelic rock and jazz into a soundtrack for the best film you've never seen. After the superb Wildflowers album on Now-Again in 2004, Connie Price and the Keystones joined forces with Big Daddy Kane in 2007 for an exclusive 12-inch in the Scion A/V series, revisiting the classic Big Daddy Kane track Give A Demonstration with new vocals from the smooth operator himself, over some heavy badass funk. The vinyl is quite rare and you'll have to pay 40 Euros now to get it... You won't find this track on their Tell Me Something soundtrack-inspired hip hop album from 2008, but, hopefully, the track will appear on the upcoming new full length Connie Price and the Keystones are currently in the studio working on with Big Daddy Kane. Look out for this new piece of NY funk/hip hop hybrid to appear at the end of the year... During the last two years Brighton based deep funk sensation Dionne Charles has risen to quite a cult status. Her first album with her band Baby Charles was among the finest things to happen in Funk in 2008, supported by the likes of Snowboy, Keb Darge, Jazzman Gerald, Monk One, Andy Smith and Mark Lamarr... we even managed to play their Artic Monkeys cover in an afro mix on the ParisDJs podcast!

She also appeared, among others, on Black Grass' fantastic III album (Catskills Records), on The New Mastersounds instant classic LP Plug & Play (One Note Records) and more recently on Soopasoul's superb Twin Stix album (Japaleno Records).

Simultaneously tight but loose, heavy but soulful and dirty, Baby Charles' funky music is indeed beautiful and thanks to Nick at Record Kicks we're proud to present this soulful ska dressing of Hardman to Please by the french dubmeister, Grant Phabao! Baby Charles are currently in the studio recording the new album which is expected for March 2010. They plan to blast everyone out of this cosmos with a whole bunch of new killer songs. We hope there will be another song to reggae-remix in there so that a nice Baby Charles reggae 45 might be pressed in the future...

The Grant Phabao recipe :
Take a smokin' dancehall hit, a true ganja song. Remove the instrumental crust, usually a digital riddim without much musicanship in it. Take the vocal part and dress it carefully with a brand new 70's reggae skanking riddim, with Jamaican heavy drumming and delicate percussions, guitar licks and melodious organ chords. Don't hesitate to spread a good slice of breaks into the beats. Leave it to rest for a few months. The final cooking part consist in a few days of getting that huge booming sound that goes with reggae. Spice with bits of echo and delay. And finally, don't forget to serve the resulting classic herb tune with an already fired-up big bammy!

Rockamovya brings together long time Jazz-heavyweight, Grammy nominated Will Bernard (Motherbug, Stanton Moore trio, Dr. Lonnie Smith), the incomparable Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace (Burning Spear, The Abyssinians, the cult film classic "Rockers") and Ryan Newman (bass), Marcus Urani (organ/keys/piano) and Harrison Stafford (rhythm guitar/ vocals) of the internationally acclaimed Cali-based Reggae-Fusion group Groundation for what will surely be a genre-defying classic of an album.

Rockamovya is already generating a strong buzz within the more traditional music industry, as well as the ever-growing conscious music community. The expansive and altogether new sound Rockamovya emits is due in large part to the inter-generational links the album has created. Whether its Horsemouth's 1960's era steppers rhythms, Bernard's 1970's inspired jazz-funk licks, or the wholly unique 21st century roots sound of Groundation, Rockamovya reaches across demographics and genres to entice and enthral listeners of any and every tribe.

In those hard times when government individuals thrive more and more on the poor, it's really nice to meet educated and involved artists. The Procussions are that kind of people, nice, intelligent and with something to say, without ever losing their natural cool. This is rare enough to be pointed out...
Their latest album, "5 Sparrows For 3 Cents", was released earlier this year in the US but only in november 2006 in Europe. It's top-of-the-notch L.A. hip hop, funky, old school, with plenty of sunshine, so we thought at Paris DJs headquarters that it could be a good idea to try and do a collaboration with them, that could also help promote their french tour.
The band got into the idea right away and soon -thanks to the Internet- the french dubmeister Grant Phabao, who recently reworked some George Clinton, Lee McDonald, Ty or Alice Russell tracks, received some vocal parts to play with...
A few days later a new reggae instrumental was born, wonderfully gracing The Procussions' track with skanking riffs, heavy bass, clavinets chops, echo, reverb and lots of percussion - Phabao style.
This is hip hop/reggae mashing-up at his best, we're just plain proud to offer you this as a free download. Get it while it's hot and don't miss the rest of the tour (see dates below).
